Game Test – Krunker

For our first Gameplay & Ludology assignment we were asked to play a free, online game (preferably one we had not played before) and assess it as a game tester. The game I will be discussing is Krunker.

Krunker is an in-window, multiplayer fps (first person shooter).
It is free to play and does not require the player to sign up for an account, although one can in order to level up their in-game abilities.
As the game is hosted as a .io (input/output); community supported map builds and mods are possible.

Visually Krunker is reminiscent of Minecraft, using low-poly, blocky shapes with simplified textures and colours

The game controls are very basic with WASD being used to move, right-click to zoom and left-click to shoot. The mouse also used to aim the gun and direct the camera’s viewpoint. Additional buttons allow your character to jump, crouch and reload, however due to the fast-paced nature of the game these controls tend to go unused.

Krunker’s gameplay is quick and repetitive.
You begin the game without a tutorial; you instead must learn to control you character as you play against people who (most likely) have a lot more experience than yourself.
This can be daunting to a new player, but it makes it all the more enjoyable when you eventually land your first kill.

When your character is shot and killed, you are dropped back into the game within 5 seconds. Rinse and repeat until the round ends.

I found the game enjoyable in small doses.
I wouldn’t usually play an FPS as I find their repetitive nature and steep learning curves tend to either bore or annoy me.
In the case of Krunker, this works to its advantage. The quick, chaotic nature of the gameplay keeps you interested, while the ability to drop in and out of games at will means you never feel bad if you are playing poorly; there is always a new round to play or lobby to join.

Overall, Krunker is a very enjoyable game.
